January 17, Transplant Day 43

The week has been a roller coaster ride with ups and downs. The team of doctors have shifted their focus off of the transplant and are now watching everything else the chemo has messed up. There is concern with spots on my lungs so they have put me on some heavy antibiotics. The antibiotics are messing up my blood chemistry and so I am on IV fluids with extra Potassium and Magnesium (important heart elements in the blood stream). Then today in looking at the enzymes from the blood draw they saw the antibiotics were messing with my liver. OKAY LET’S CHANGE THE ANITBIOTIC! Many Amyloid patients have involvement with more than one major organ. For me it meant a heart transplant, but so far, there have not been any issues with the kidneys or liver. I will have a CT SCAN on Thursday, which will allow the doctors to see how these spots have changed over the past three weeks. If they are diminished, then the drugs have helped curb an infection. If all goes well, next week could be a great week. On the “Up Side” I have been walking more and eating better. Food is an interesting thing. We need the nutrition, but it can also boost our spirits and attitude. This week a simple Ritz Cracker with peanut butter on it was as if I had just been to Dairy Queen. Funny how our perspective changes.
The building we are in has a three tier underground parking garage. This provides me a chance to walk on a smooth surface and go up and down a few ramps to help rebuild my strength. I carry a back pack that contains a portable IV pump that is loading me up with the fluids the doctors have me on. I am hooked up to this for a total of eight hours each day. I am listening to my IPod to either some good walking music from the 70’s or a German language lesson that I am struggling to learn.

  3. Awaiting news on that CT Scan, good news I hope, you sure don't need any more challenges than you already face Rick.

I quit eating fast-foods decades ago but I would be happy to meet up with you at a DQ or Dick's for a celebratory thick shake when you are back on your feet!!

German eh; I tried to learn french one time, but that was to better communicate with a French girlfriend I once dated... dropped the effort and the girl... both were more difficult than first thought!

    Guten tag!
