When young, I remember seeing the local TV news doing a special segment on children at the hospital during Christmas. Hospital staff went out of their way to make the holidays special for kids who would be under special care on December 25th. The same would occur on their birthday, that staff would decorate their room or bring them a special celebrity to help make the day special. It seems like the hospital is the wrong place to be on a holiday or a birthday. But if you do, then there are people who will help make it a special event.
This happened to me yesterday with my family. On September 6 I turned; well older. And being here stuck in the UW Hospital on the 5th floor seemed like the wrong place to be. Well, the day before my sister was stopping in for a visit. When she arrived, she had my brother from Las Vegas along for a surprise visit. I had been talking to my brother Joe on the phone earlier in the week. But to have him here with me was a huge treat. I was shocked and a little over come that my sis and brother had gone to all this trouble. After a great visit, he told me he would be back for a visit the next day. Everyone was able to keep the secret that he was coming; that's what got me. Nice gift.
So now going into my birthday, I knew brother and sister would be visiting. Then my oldest son, Derek, said he wanted to stop in with his family to say hi. This was again going to be very nice as I enjoy seeing my son and his family. They were arriving at 1:00. Rose had decorated the room with fresh flowers and balloons, the place looked festive. At 1:00 I heard people coming down the hall so I got out of bed to greet everyone. I was greeted at the door by my youngest son who I have not seen for several months. It was a very special moment for Dad, again very over whelmed, as I embraced my son after too long of an absence. This was the "icing on the cake" for the day; my wife, both sons, my brother and sister plus in laws and grandkids. And again everyone knew about both son's visit and no one let on. (This, plus the Blog greetings, cards and well wishes sent by other three children and friends). It had to be the best Birthday a Dad could have. So who says you can not enjoy a birthday in the hospital? Thanks everyone for making this a most memorable day.
One special event this week, our daughter Lanette will have her second child, Jude, on Wednesday. Remember both Mom and child in your prayers.
Now my health. Today I got a feeding tube (not fun but manageable) to help me with getting nutrition. I have had a real problem with appetite and eating. Tomorrow, I will get a "Swan", device to measure blood flow output from heart, possibly as a temporary or a few days. If a few days, I get moved to the ICU. If there, this blog may not get a timely update. I will do my best to keep people informed. That's all for now.
Rick, I am so happy that your birthday was wonderful! I'm sure there were lots of happy tears shed as you greeted family that you hadn't seen in a while.

It was so great to see everyone on Sunday. So thank you Rick, for having a birthday. :) If Rose sees this, maybe she could send us Lanette's address? Keeping you, Lanette, and baby in our prayers.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday Rick. I thought it was the 11th for some reason--sorry I missed it. In simpler times (the BC era) the EARS folks would be treating you and me to lunch this week, but it sounds like you had a much more profound birthday experience there in the hospital. We continue to pray for you. Indeed, more people are praying for you now that at any point in your life--you are in good hands. Romans 8:28
ReplyDeleteSee you soon

ReplyDeleteHi Rick! So glad to hear that you had a wonderful surprise birthday in the hospital. Family is everything! I am so glad that they were all able to come to make it a special day for you as you are a very special person yourself. I took Rose to lunch last week (to Taco Loco in Wenatchee--YUMMY! They said to say hello to you). She filled me in on all that was going on there. Hope all goes well. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. We talk about you in our Monday morning meetings each week (only good things). Everyone sends their best. My only hospital birthday story was when I was ten years old and I had an emergency appendectomy. I was treated like Queen for a Day. I still remember it as it was great. Mary
ReplyDeleteHi Rick - I just learned of the rough road you find yourself on right now. I emailed Tom Kahler and he pointed me to this great blog. I just read all the way through it, bookmarked it, and will check in on your progress.
ReplyDeleteFulton Ditch may go into a pipe. It's a hard sell to some shareholders. I regret the passing of the era of the open ditch myself - such a wonderful amenity for many of us lucky enough to live beside one. But with climate change, we will see less snowpack, and had best grab the chance to become highly efficient in water delivery. OK - enough shop talk!
Best wishes to you, Rick. you must have a laptop in your room - If you like, you can reach me directly at sabold@methownet.com
Hi Rick! I finally got connected with your blog thanks to Tom K. Sounds like a great birthday celebration! You are in my thoughts and prayers! The committee meetings are in Seatac next week, if you're up for a visit I would love to stop by. No worries if your not.... you have bigger things to focus your energies on! But I'll be missing you at the meeting regardless!

Hello Klinges! I just heard the wonderful news that you are in surgery as I am typing getting your new heart. I am praying that everything goes fine. I'm sure, Rick, that you won't be reading this yourself for a while but hopefully someone will pass along the message to you and Rose. Your PUD family is rooting for you from over here and can't wait to hear the great results! Have someone post a comment if they can about how you are doing.

Just heard the surgery went smoothly and everything is good. We will still be praying for you and hoping you continue with great success! Enjoy your new heart!
ReplyDeleteHey Rick,
ReplyDeleteI hope that your first night with your new ticker went well! I know that you have a lot of work still ahead of you, but we are so thankful that you have the first step out of the way. And, just in time for the fall hiking season! Get stronger every day man.
I just found out what you've been going through from Julene's Facebook post. I was shocked because I've always thought you were a fine example of good health. I read your entire blog, and I've got to tell you my eyes were a bit wet by the time I got half way through. I've always thought you were one of the nicest men I've ever known. I truly look forward to following your blog. My best wishes to you and your family.
