Today (May 5) marks one year since I have been at my office working as a Fisheries Biologist. A year ago, I was in Seattle seeing both Cardiologists and Oncologists to determine my best course of treatment to correct the disease that had damaged my heart. Last year on coming home from one of these clinic visits, I took a bad fall at home followed by a lengthy stay in the hospital. The fall was a sign to the Cardiologists that my heart was shutting down. This event pushed my case faster through the medical process to receive a heart. In looking back, I remember thinking I would certainly be back at work by January with close to full recovery. In reality, today my immune system is still very weak and I still have a ways to go to recover my strength. I believe if I only had the heart transplant to recover from I would be fine today. The second transplant pushed my recovery time back. In many ways it has been more difficult to recover from.
This week I have been walking more without the aide of the walker. I see more strength in my legs and I have more confidence in my balance. Tomorrow (May 6) will be an early day as we are expected to be in Seattle by 8:30 AM for blood draw, clinic visit and followed with a heart biopsy.
This spring we have had several four legged gardeners work on our yard. They are partial to tulips and other spring seasonal flowers. I believe they are also eating the lilac bush in the back yard. The yard is green, but lacks other colors in the flower beds.
